HIGH LATITUDE GAMMA RAYS ASSOCIATED WITH VIRGO

چکیده مقاله:
A more detailed analysis is made of the energy spectrum of the diffuse component of extragalactic gamma rays over the range of 0.3- 10 GeV, obtained fromthe EGRET instrument at the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. The derived excess energy spectrum of high galactic latitude, b > 60°, using intercept method shows that it is correlated with Virgo cluster (over lsr) and average Virgo intensity is about 20 percent of total diffuse extra galactic intensity. The Virgo predicted models seem to be overestimated

متن کاملHigh Energy Gamma Rays
This article reviews the present status of high energy γ-ray astronomy at energies above 30 MeV. Observations in the past decade using both spaceand ground-based experiments have been primarily responsible for giving a tremendous boost to our knowledge of the high energy Universe. High energy γ-rays have been detected from a wide range of Galactic and extragalactic astrophysical sources, such a...
متن کاملAstrophysics with High Energy Gamma Rays
Recent results, the present status and the perspectives of high energy gamma-ray astronomy are described. Since the satellite observations by the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory and its precursor missions have been reviewed extensively, emphasis is on the results from the ground-based gamma-ray telescopes. They concern the physics of Pulsar Nebulae, Supernova Remnants in their assumed role as the...
متن کاملEgret Observations of Gamma Rays from Point Sources with Galactic Latitude +10 < B < +40
The EGRET instrument aboard the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) has completed the rst all-sky survey in high-energy gamma rays and has repeatedly viewed selected portions of the sky. Analysis of the region with galactic latitude +10 < b < +40 indicates the presence of nineteen point sources, including nine which can be identiied as active galactic nuclei, some of which have been reported p...
متن کاملIntergalactic Extinction of High Energy Gamma-Rays
We discuss the determination of the intergalactic pair-production absorption coefficient as derived by Stecker and De Jager by making use of a new empirically based calculation of the spectral energy distribution of the intergalactic infrared radiation field as given by Malkan and Stecker. We show that the results of the Malkan and Stecker calculation agree well with recent data on the infrared...
متن کاملVery High Energy Gamma Rays Frommarkarian
During remarkable aring activity in 1997 Markarian 501 was the brightest source in the sky at TeV energies, outshining the Crab Nebula by a factor of up to 10. Periods of aring activity each lasting a few days were observed simultaneously by several gamma ray telescopes. Contemporaneous multiwavelength observations in April 1997 show that a substantial fraction of the total AGN power is at TeV ...
